My Work My philosophy is to make the most of what the season and region offer: I call this the Spudbash approach. It is a richly-satisfying way of life and simplifies one's consumer choices. I work freelance, taking commissions for TV, written features and recipes, tutored tastings, cookery demonstrations and podcast work, for which I can suggest appropriately seasonal dates. My writing is often accompanied by my own photographs. I cover the range of British and seasonal foods: fruits, vegetables, herbs, wild food, meat, fish and seafood, baked goods, dairy products and preserves. Drinks are of no less interest: wine, beer, cider, perry and spirits, beverages, fruit-based drinks and water. As an active member of The Guild of Food Writers, I am often in London and I am usually happy to travel elsewhere, according to the demands of work and of the seasons. I am proud of my tasting ability, which comes into its own when judging, e.g. The Tastiest Apple at the National Fruit Show 2006 and the Great Taste Awards 2007 (I was one of the Supreme Judges), and in product and restaurant reviews. From 2005 to 2008, I ran the Big Little Fruit Campaign, to highlight heritage culinary fruits through dialogue with the public and interested bodies such as the National Fruit Collections and Slow Food, and through my media work. In April 2007, BBC 2’s Sweet Baby James featured my work with fruit, billing me as an expert – a matter for some pride, as I have indeed tasted hundreds of fruit varieties and know how little I know.
